On April 28, 2007, Jonas Burgos, a 37-year-old Philippine political activist, was eating lunch in Ever Gotesco shopping mall in Manila. At around 1:20 p.m., a group of four men approached his table. They spoke quietly to Burgos for about 20 minutes. Then the men began pushing him toward the mall's exit. "I'm just an activist," a waitress heard Burgos shout. A mall security guard approached the group. As the guard would later testify, the men warned him that they were police officers. They hustled Burgos outside and into a maroon Toyota. The continuous firing, the rain of tear gas and forcible entry of one APC truck at the Manila Hotel Peninsula yesterday sent strong signals that the combined special forces of the police and military were given orders to launch all-out assault even at the risk of civilian lives including Bishop Julio Labayen, Vice Pres. Teofisto Guingona and so many members of the media. What we have witnessed in the way Malacañang handled the Makati crisis is total disregard of civilian safety and the people's appeal for sobriety. We strongly condemn Malacañang for resorting to excessive force that could have cost the lives of so many people. |

.. AND FURTHER DRIVES THE PEOPLE TO ARMED REVOLUTION
Prof. Jose Maria Sison Even without the Anti-Terror Act, euphemistically called the Human Security Act of 2007, the US-directed Arroyo regime has unleashed the counterrevolutionary military and police forces on the people and spurred them to commit all kinds of barbarities, including the massacre and massive displacement of people in the countryside and the extrajudicial killing, abduction and torture of so many unarmed legal activists. These atrocities are all in line with the Bush global war of terror and its Philippine puppet version called Oplan Bantay Laya I and II. |
